Student Visas and Travel Health Insurance

Student Visas

We will send you all the instructions and deadlines you need to apply for your Student Visa in your 1st Exchange Information Package.

The Hong Kong Immigration Department requires all overseas students to obtain a proper Student Visa to study in Hong Kong. Please note that if you do not have a valid student visa or you do not have the right of abode in Hong Kong, you will not be permitted to study here.

You have two options to apply for a Student Visa:

  • Apply through our office OR

  • Apply at your local Chinese Embassy / Consulate-General

We strongly suggest that you choose Option 1 (link to Option 1) and apply for your visa through our office, as many students who have applied for visas through their local Chinese Embassy or Consulate have encountered difficulties. Click on the links on the right for more details about each option.

Student Visa Fee

The fee for your student visa is HK$400. This fee includes all administrative charges and also the cost of sending the visa labels back to you by courier. Starting in Fall 2011, a central office at HKUST will help to handle all student visas.

Processing Time

Regardless of which option you choose, please allow at least 8 weeks for your visa application to be processed.

Option 1: Apply through our Office

Option 2: Apply at your local Chinese Embassy / Consulate-General

Travel Health Insurance

For your health and safety, you will be required to obtain Travel Health Insurance for the duration of your stay. Medical care is expensive in Hong Kong and in Asia in general. Having appropriate insurance will minimize these costs for you should they arise.

Your insurance must meet a basic set of minimum specifications. We will outline the exact details of these requirements in your 1st Exchange Information Package.

If you are unable to obtain insurance that fully meets the specifications, we have a plan available which you can purchase through HKUST that meets all the requirements. This plan costs US$249 for 5 months coverage. You can find more information on how to apply for this insurance through HKUST in your 1st Exchange Information Package.

On-campus Health Facilities

At HKUST, we take care of our students’ health. Feel free to visit our on-campus Medical and Dental Clinic, which provides services for general consultations.
